The windows fogged but no one got out
The driver swore a spell into the radio

The hours passed but no help showed

The intercom crackles overhead
I couldn’t understand a word the driver said
foreign tongues buzz around my ears

The patience on the bus, started to go
They’d seized all our food at the border patrol
And I could see the town but it couldn’t see us
Or there’s something it didn’t trust about helping our bus

I grabbed my bag, made my way outside
My heart filled up but it wasn’t with love
And the horseflies, as big as my eyes
Puppeteering my hands as I cut toward the lights

In not too long, I’m broken to find
The lights I saw are the back of the bus
Somehow I’d circled and come back round
But you didn’t even need to be there
To hear out loud my disappointed sigh

Got back on the bus, was handed a cup
The driver said, that we had to stay up
I got nervous, choked my coffee down
And the old woman next to me read the grounds
